Google launches its biggest Doodle, and it’s a retro-pixel game to celebrate the Tokyo Olympics
Google just launched its biggest Doodle (a modified version of the Google logo above the search bar), and it’s a retro-pixel game to celebrate the Tokyo Olympics! Interspersed with real Japanese anime-style cutscenes (obviously), Doodle Champion Island Games is a sports-arcade game in which a cat (led by the player) can engage in 7 different sports competitions (archery, table tennis, skateboarding, etc.). The controls are basic – often just moving left to right or bottom to top and pressing the button at the right time – and unfortunately not always very responsive, which frankly isn’t the main thing here.
This interactive Doodle was produced in collaboration with STUDIO4 ° C, a Japanese animation studio to which we owe in particular the sexy cutscenes of the Catherine puzzle-game. Google released a behind-the-scenes video of the title’s development, which shows that making such a “simple” game still required a lot of work.
