Google continues to fight Apple with a giant billboard in Las Vegas
Google continues to find it annoying that Apple can’t keep up with RCS. Apple has already made it clear that it is not waiting for RCS, but Google hopes to convince with a gigantic billboard in Las Vegas.
RCS
The question is to what extent Google directs the message to Apple: by choosing Las Vegas in the week of the major gadget fair CES, it seems mainly intended to make people who use Apple less happy with ‘their’ brand. The reason Google insists on RCS (Rich Communication Services) is that it is an improved version of SMS and MMS. Apple’s iMessage app keeps switching to text messages when it comes to Android users, which means that photos and videos, among other things, appear in extremely poor quality.
This makes the iMessage experience between iPhones much better than between an iPhone and an Android device, making it less attractive for people to choose Android. The billboard (courtesy of Uptin) reads, “The ball may have dropped in 2022, but you don’t have to drop the ball in fixing your pixelated photos and videos.” That’s a very literal translation, what it actually says is, “You may have failed in 2022, but in 2022 you don’t have to fail when it comes to fixing your pixelated photos and videos.”

Billboard in Las Vegas
There are also a number of lines of code on the billboard with the message: “some code to get the ball rolling”. It’s clearly directed at Apple, which Google has hoped for years to implement RCS. This is because videos and photos can be sent in high quality, in addition to other advantages. Think of the ability to get read receipts and the use of modern emoji and animations.
Google comes up with all sorts of creative ways to get Apple to do just that. For example, it previously came up with a kind of parody of a song by hip-hop artist Drake to draw attention to the subject. However, every attempt so far has been unsuccessful. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook simply says that people should buy an iPhone for their mother if she is disappointed that she cannot share beautiful photos via iMessage on her Android. So it doesn’t look like Apple is going to change its mind anytime soon, but it clearly doesn’t make Google any less combative.
