Google Chat gets gif support via Tenor

Google Hangouts is no more and Google Chat is allowed to take over from Hangouts. That also means that Chat is getting more and more features that should make the loss of Hangouts more bearable. Now there is support for gifs on the go.

Google Chat gets gifs via Tenor

Google announces that support for gifs from the well-known Tenor platform is on its way to the web version of Google Chat. At the moment you can also use gifs in the chat rooms and private conversations (and the editors of Androidworld often do that). Unfortunately, this is only possible via a bot such as Giphy’s or by manually uploading a gif file. Fortunately, that is now changing with a new gif button at the bottom of the input bar.

Google turns the gif button on by default for both personal Google accounts and Workspace accounts, in both Gmail and Chat on the web. The button is already in Gmail for consumers, but not yet in Workspace. Admins who hate gifs can turn it off for their organization.

Google, of course, chooses Tenor because it acquired this platform in 2018 and hopefully the new feature can still persuade former Hangouts users to use Chat. Judging by the reviews in the Play Store, the app could use some stars.
