Google: “Android tablets are the future”

It’s not a headline from ten years ago: Google really only said this year that it believes in the future of the tablet. Although the tablet seemed to be on its way back a few years ago, the coronavirus has partly ensured that we are able to find the devices again. Google really likes it and starts a new department that will focus on the development of Android tablets.

Android 12L

Google is already working on Android 12L, an update of Android specifically for tablets, but judging by a vacancy, more is being invested in the development of Android for tablets. The vacancy is for a Senior Engineering Manager, Android Tablet App Experience and this is what it says in the description:

“We believe the future of computing is shifting towards more powerful and capable tablets. We’re working to deliver the next chapter in computing and input by launching seamless support across all our platforms and experiences that provide new and better ways to be productive and creative.”

Google goes for tablets

The person who wants to hire Google must, among other things, develop roadmaps and develop the first apps that are ‘ink first’. It may be that this refers to, for example, the use of a stylus, something that is normally mainly spent on Samsung. Google seems to be quite serious with Android for tablets, because in addition to this vacancy, Google employees have also been spotted on LinkedIn that they work for Android Tablet, so Google really seems to want to set up a large department.

It almost sounds like Google has only just discovered that tablets exist, but at the same time, it’s probably a smart choice. People know where to find tablets again and it makes sense that Google also wants to serve people on those devices. At the moment Android on tablets is not very exciting, but if Google wants to invest in the experience, Android can be much stronger in the tablet field. That’s essential, because right now the equivalent of the word tablet is still iPad.
