From donkey prick to cookie bites: 7 x old Dutch games
nail shit
Tell this to your child and he will start laughing spontaneously because of the crazy name. Still, it’s quite logical that this old game is called that, because you have to squat down a nail into an empty bottle. You don’t need much: empty bottles, a rope and therefore a number of nails. Tie the rope with a nail to each child’s waist, line up the children and let the fun begin. Who gets the nail in the bottle fastest?
shuffleboard
A game that many families used to play on New Year’s Eve, but actually this is always fun. Throw the discs into the hole with the highest points – quite a trick, because if you throw too hard, you get it back just as hard – and the one with the most points wins.

Perhaps the game, if we’re talking about the past. What do you need? A piece of gingerbread, twine and a tea towel. Hang the gingerbread slices on the rope and hang the rope at the right height for the children, so that they can reach them blindfolded. Whoever finishes the cake first – with their hands behind their backs of course – is the winner.
sack race
Also a very nice old-fashioned game: set up a course with, for example, pawns or bottles filled with water and divide the children into two groups. The first child in line squeezes into a burlap sack and jumps down the course, after which the burlap sack is passed to the second in line. The group that is fastest and has not knocked down any pawns or bottles may cheer.
Donkey Prick
Everyone remembers this one: draw a large donkey on a piece of cardboard. Blindfolded, the first player has to prick a prick object with the string attached – the donkey’s tail – in the correct place on the cardboard. Whoever does this best is the winner. Donkey Prick is one of the games that are ideal to play indoors when it is pouring rain outside. Do you want to make it extra difficult? First let the children do a few circles blindfolded.
Egg on spoon
Two spoons and two eggs: that’s all you need for this game. Divide the children into two groups and have everyone walk one by one with the spoon in their mouth and an egg on it, to the other side and back. Who finishes the fastest and didn’t drop the eggs? Oh yes: if you don’t want a mess, boil the eggs first.
tin cans
Set up a stack of cans as a tower and have the children throw a small ball: the one who knocks over the most cans is the winner. Very simple, but fun guaranteed.
