Foundation (Apple TV +): a single sentence was enough to convince Apple
The sci-fi series Foundation will arrive on September 24 on Apple TV +. While waiting for the release, David S. Goyer, the creator of the series, revealed to the Hollywood Reporter that it took a single sentence to seduce Apple and make it want to accept the project.
Apple quickly liked Foundation
Here is what David S. Goyer said:
When Apple asked me if I could put it in one sentence (they asked with a laugh), I said, “This is a 1,000-year chess game between Hari Seldon and the Empire, and all the characters in between are pawns, but some of the pawns during this saga end up becoming kings and queens ”.
It’s a generational saga. But the anthological time element didn’t take me too long to figure out. What was harder to figure out was: how do you make the show emotional? Because the books are not particularly emotional and, in general, on television people watch for emotion. They want to fall in love with these characters. So I had to find ways to use Asimov’s themes and ideas, but internalize them in the characters.
The filmmaker adds that offering a series rather than a film is a good point because it allows you to have more hours and therefore tell the story in a little more detail. “If I had to do it in the form of films, even if it was a trilogy of feature films, it would be about nine hours. I presented it as eight seasons, so if it works I’ll have 80 hours ”, he said.
He adds that Apple has been generous with the budget. “It was an ample budget”, he said. “I’ll say this: on average per hour, if you take two episodes and put them together, the budget is bigger than some of the movies I’ve done”. See you on September 24 to find out what Foundation on Apple TV +.
