Fiat makes dreams come true

E-cars are to replace combustion engines as the next step in mobility. But that doesn’t have to be the end of it. Driving with electricity offers significant advantages and some of them have not yet been thought of. But one thing is, charging while driving. Fiat now makes it possible.

Inductive charging on the go: Fiat e-cars drive without draining the battery

The charging stops for e-cars are still a test of patience, at least compared to filling up the tank and driving on, as one is used to with petrol and diesel engines. So far, fast charging stations have been the method of choice and electric cars have to have large batteries to be competitive. Alternatively, several manufacturers are now using solar modules in their electric vehicles, which are supposed to get more range.

According to Fiat, the 500 Elektro has meanwhile succeeded in taking a different charging route – a better one, one has to admit. The small Elektroflitzer pulls the electricity directly from the street using inductive charging devices hidden under the roadway.

Lease an e-car and collect a bonus of €6,000

Tests on a suitably equipped racetrack have shown that electric cars like the Fiat 500 Elektro are capable “to drive at typical highway speeds without using the energy stored in its battery” (Source: Stellantis). A real announcement that could really bring e-cars ahead of combustion engines.

The “Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer” process (dynamic, wireless energy transfer, DWPT) is being worked on together with several partners in a pilot project by the Stellantis Group. Unlike at the charging station, in the tests the battery of the e-car is not charged. Instead, the energy was used directly to drive the electric motor.

Charging an electric car while driving: game changer or gimmick?

Stellantis explains that the DWPT technology should be able to be used in all electric vehicles that are equipped with a corresponding receiver. This absorbs the energy from the conductor loop and transfers it directly to the drive. the The range of e-cars can be increased in this way and save the battery.

If you drive an electric car, you should be familiar with batteries. These rules do not only apply to smartphones:

It will be exciting to find out what emerges from the pilot project. If Stellantis could give their own electric cars an advantage, that would be a start – Of course, it needs the technical prerequisites in the street. However, a device for retrofitting regardless of the brand would be far more exciting. The tests are to be continued next with a Maserati.
