Federal government wants to fund private wall boxes with 500 million euros
As electromobility advances, the need for charging stations also increases. After the first funding program for private wall boxes expired in 2021, the federal government is now following suit. Grants of 500 million euros are planned for private households. But there are conditions.
The mobility revolution is progressing, because more and more electric cars are rolling on the streets in Germany. The need for charging stations and private wall boxes is therefore constantly increasing. But last year there was no funding program for the expansion of the e-charging infrastructure.
Until the end of 2021, it was again possible to apply for grants from the Reconstruction Loan Corporation (KfW). A total of 800,000 applications were made for one million wall boxes. The program had a total budget of 800 million euros. But despite the lively interest, the federal government had let it expire.
Funding for e-charging infrastructure temporarily suspended
But now the Federal Ministry of Transport has announced new funding of 900 million euros. According to ARD a new program for the installation of charging stations, photovoltaic systems and storage solutions for energy management will be available from autumn 2023.
However, not all points have been clarified yet. For example, it is unclear how much money individual applicants can receive. Overall, the federal government expects a volume of several tens of thousands of applications. Of the funding volume, 500 million euros are to be made available for private wall boxes. 400 million are available for the expansion of the fast charging infrastructure and commercial cars.
New registrations of electric vehicles declining
One reason for the federal government’s rethinking is likely to be general concerns about a lack of charging infrastructure. Because while the registration offices recorded around 17.8 percent of electric cars in 2022, in the first few months of 2023 it was only around 15 percent.
The demand seems to be slightly declining. With its new funding program, the federal government wants to make electromobility more attractive again and boost new registrations of e-cars.
