For a long time, the iPad Mini was the unloved stepchild in Apple’s tablet range. With the new iPad Mini 6, however, that has changed. The cult manufacturer has left no stone unturned here. The hard work has paid off, as new sales figures show.

Apple

Apple has been offering the iPad Mini since 2012. However, the US company never gave the mini-tablet anything more than minor hardware revisions, which were mostly limited to a faster processor. That all changed in 2021 with the iPad Mini 6. New design, support for the Apple Pencil 2, USB C and much more. The sixth generation of the iPad Mini cut the old braids of its predecessors. This courage to innovate was apparently well received by buyers.

iPad Mini 6 is the 2nd best-selling tablet in the first quarter of 2022

According to figures from market researchers at IDC, that is iPad Mini 6 ranked #2 in best-selling tablets in the first quarter of 2022. Only the iPad (2021) went over the counter more frequently. IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo shared the top 5 most popular tablets in one image on Twitter:

The bronze medal therefore goes to the professional version from last year, followed by Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8 – the first and only non-Apple tablet in the top five. In fifth place is the iPad Air (2020).

With 31.8 percent, Apple is also still the leading force in the global tablet market. Runner-up Samsung comes in at 21.8 percent, while number 3 on the podium is Amazon. The online giant’s Fire tablets were able to capture a market share of almost 10 percent in the first quarter of 2022.

Inexpensive entry into Apple’s tablet world

The reasons for the success of the iPad Mini 6 are likely to be varied. In addition to the new design and the compact dimensions price definitely plays a role too. After the iPad (2021), it marks the cheapest entry into Apple’s tablet world. Apple calls for an RRP of 549 euros, but the new iPad Mini is already cheaper in free trade – for example at Amazon (see Amazon).
