EU wants to build its own semiconductor factory
No time right now?
Car companies are currently struggling with shortages in semiconductors. The EU wants to become more independent in this area – with its own factory.
A semiconductor factory is to be built in the EU. As Bloomberg has learned from insiders, the EU wants to become more independent from the USA and Asia. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) and Samsung Electronics could be involved, but nothing has been decided yet.

New construction or conversion possible
According to Bloomberg’s information, these are semiconductors with structure widths from less than 10 to 2 nanometers. Both the retrofitting of an existing factory and a new building are conceivable.
“When choosing factory locations, we have to consider many factors, including customer needs. TSMC is not ruling out a possibility, but there is no concrete plan at this point, ”a TSMC spokeswoman told Bloomberg.
More independent when it comes to future technologies
The EU is under pressure in the face of semiconductor shortages. Volkswagen recently announced that it would not be able to produce tens of thousands of cars because chips were missing.
It is true that the group attributed this to itself because too few orders were simply ordered. Nevertheless, the case shows the dependence of Europe on other countries.
With a new factory, the EU wants to be better prepared for future technologies such as 5G, connected cars and high-performance computers.
