Etsy has become a popular marketplace for handmade and vintage items. However, if you want to offer your items on the platform yourself, you have to pay attention to the fees on Etsy. We’ll show you how much it costs to sell on Etsy.

Ever since it was founded in 2005, Etsy has established itself as one of the most popular online platforms for handmade items. In 2021 alone, the e-commerce platform has one Revenue of $2.3 billion generated. The year before, the figure was 1.7 billion – an increase of around 35 percent.

In Germany, too, the platform has become increasingly popular in recent years. After the USA and Great Britain, Germany occupies third place in the country ranking measured by the Downloads of the app.

Selling on Etsy: What are the fees?

The Etsy’s business model is quite simple and easy to explain. Because the e-commerce platform makes money primarily from the products that are offered and sold there.

On the one hand, sellers have to pay a fee when they list their items. The second fee is then due when an item is purchased.

This is how the selling fees on Etsy are made up

If you want to sell your handmade products on Etsy, the platform first requires a listing fee. This is due for every product that you place on the platform.

The listing fee is listed by Etsy as $0.20 per item. The conversion is based on the current market rate. In Germany, the listing fee is currently EUR 0.18 and the sales tax due thereon is EUR 0.03.

It should be noted that an item is considered to be posted in the shop for up to four months. If it is not sold within this time, you must renew the item. This can be done either automatically or manually. If you renew your article after the four months, the listing fee is due again.

If you sell your item, Etsy will take a 6.5 percent fee. This fee applies to the total amount of the transaction – i.e. the sales price, shipping and any gift wrapping. In addition, there is also the proportionate sales tax.

If your buyers use Etsy Payments for their purchase, falls another fee at. This processing fee consists of a flat fee per order and a percentage fee.

This varies from country to country – in Germany there is a fee of four percent and a fixed amount of 0.30 euros.

What are the fees when making a purchase on Etsy?

In contrast to the sellers, their customers do not have to pay any fees on Etsy. Because the costs for listing the products and the sales commission are borne solely by the sellers.

However, you may have to pay shipping fees when making a purchase from Etsy. These are based on the provisions of the respective providers.

However, you should note that you pay the Etsy fees at least indirectly when you make a purchase. Because the sellers will calculate these in their prices in advance.
