‘Ethics in rapid AI development worries us’

Google staff have expressed concerns about the ethical issues involved in AI (artificial intelligence) development. Precisely because artificial intelligence tools are now popping up like mushrooms, they are questioning ethics. In other words: have all facets and consequences been considered in the development of that artificial intelligence? And not in general: Google employees are concerned about the development of new artificial intelligence at Google itself.

Chatbot Bard

When Google just unveiled its AI tool Bard, there were already doubts among the staff about the speed with which the announcement was made. Now we hear doubts from that side again. Employees note that Google may not be careful enough when it comes to developing new artificial intelligence.

Bloomberg said this after talking to staff. It thinks that Google wants to be a little too fast to stay ahead of the competition and is a bit sloppy in that rush. Or above all: not asking the right ethical questions when developing it. It even goes so far that the department responsible for ethical issues in software development has been instructed not to get in the way.

It sounds like they are seen more as a hindrance for developers than an important department that can add things. For example, the people of the team should not just stop AI projects. This all seems to have started when the team indicated that it wants to make it clear that the tools are still in an experimental phase, in order to gain more understanding if there are flaws in the AI. In itself a noble goal, but apparently their colleagues were not waiting for that. The child-friendliness score, which must once be 100 percent, can now also be 99 percent and so more high standards are released.

AI developments at Google

Google feels the hot breath of ChatGPT down the neck: the tool has been called the ‘future Google’ several times and that is undoubtedly not nice to hear. Google has already announced various artificial intelligence applications and although virtually no tool is already widely and publicly available, it appears to be causing some concern behind the scenes. One of the employees even called Bard a pathological liar. The information is often incorrect and that can lead to dangerous situations.

We’re likely to hear more about the company’s AI capabilities at Google I/O in May. The problems are undoubtedly not highlighted here, but it is good to know that these things may be playing in the background.
