Electric car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.46 seconds

Students from Stuttgart have built an electric car that accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 1.46 seconds. In doing so, they broke a world record.

Electric cars are already shaping the streetscape in many cities. No wonder, because electric mobility will probably replace dirty combustion engines in the long term. But are races like in Formula 1 with electric cars actually conceivable? Yes! At least when it comes to students at the University of Stuttgart goes.

Because the students set a new acceleration world record with an electric car on September 23, 2022. With a maximum output of 180 kilowatts, which corresponds to around 1,750 hp per tonne, the vehicle reached a speed of 100 km/h in 1.461 seconds. Forces of 2.5 g acted here.

Electric car world record: First attempts failed

However, the first attempt in July 2022 failed. At that time, the vehicle swerved and drove into a barrier made of tires. Although there were no injuries, the vehicle suffered severe damage. At the beginning of September there was a second attempt, which the organizers had to cancel due to technical problems.

So the team was running out of time. Because the ambient temperature influences the performance of electric motors. With autumn approaching, the students start another attempt at the end of September – with success.

Many nations fight for the best time

On October 6, Danne received confirmation from the Guinness World Records jury. So the new record holders come from Germany. Already in 2012 they set their first record. At that time, it took around 2.681 seconds for the vehicle to reach 100 kilometers per hour.

But shortly afterwards the crown went to the Netherlands and Switzerland, because even more powerful engines were developed there. In 2015, Stuttgart followed with a record that the Swiss then broke again. But now the students are following suit again. The only question is how long the record will last.
