E-car danger from water? Skoda cleans up with myth
There are many prejudices against which electric cars have to assert themselves. From the risk of fire from the large batteries to fear of range, there is a lot involved. But are e-cars actually weatherproof? After all, electricity and water don’t get along very well. Skoda makes it clear once and for all what e-car drivers have to pay attention to – and what not.
Skoda reassures e-car drivers: rainwater is not a problem when charging
The answer is simple: strictly speaking, to nothing. Because as with combustion engines, electric cars also play a role Security one of the most important roles. So anyone who is worried about connecting the electric car to the charging station in the rain can rest easy. The Vehicles are protected against the ingress of water. Even if you establish contact between the charging station and the charging port on the electric car, nothing can happen to you.
“Contrary to what is sometimes assumed, this High-voltage system of electric cars no risk of electric shock neither while driving nor when charging”, for example Skoda clear some time ago. Experts also have a clear opinion on the risk of rust.
On the one hand, this is ensured by a safety management system that is installed in the electric cars. The software first checks whether there are any disruptive factors or risks once the connection has been established at the charging port. The current flow is only activated when the system has ensured that all components are working safely. So while you plug in the cable, you are protected.
The system also ensures that Power supply interrupted immediately should something change in the correct charging process – similar to a fuse at home, the power is switched off if something is wrong.
A lot is changing this year, and not just for e-car drivers:
Not just for e-cars: extreme flooding can damage electronics
In addition, the charging contacts are sealed, so that under normal circumstances no water penetrate to conductive points can. Here, as is often the case in the automotive sector, manufacturers have to meet high safety standards. Gaskets are usually designed to remain tight up to a certain water pressure. Electric cars can therefore easily withstand rain and a drive through the car wash. According to experts, there is also no increased risk of rusting.
An exception could be flooding: With huge masses of water, it is quite possible that the moisture will find a way and damage the electronics (source: e-driver). However, this also applies to combustion engines. If the water penetrates the window seals, for example, it could find other ways to reach the sensitive equipment through the interior. In such a case, however, you will hopefully no longer be sitting in the car anyway and have already got yourself to safety.
