Don’t just ride a roller coaster with the iPhone 14 (here’s why)

You better not get on a roller coaster with the iPhone 14 anymore. Due to the speed and abrupt movements, the Crash Detection function may be activated just like that. Fortunately, you can do something about it.

Read on after the ad.

iPhone 14: roller coaster crash detection

One of the new features in the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone 14 Pro Max is Crash Detection. The Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2022 and Apple Watch Ultra also have it.

The function is used to automatically call emergency services when you are involved in a (car) accident. Apple told the Apple Event that they tested the Crash Detection feature on four types of serious car accidents. These are a frontal impact, side impact, rear-end impact and a car roll-over collision.

It is quite difficult to use the new function on the iPhone 14 simply activate. The iPhone 14 (Pro) uses the data from the accelerometer, the gyroscope, the microphone and the GPS to find out whether you have indeed bumped into something. However, there now seems to be a fairly easy way to trigger the function.

In several American fun areas, Crash Detection of the iPhone 14 is activated during roller coaster rides. Some amusement parks therefore ask you not to take smartphones with you during roller coaster rides or to put your smartphone on airplane mode.

So are you going to an amusement park with a roller coaster soon and do you have an iPhone 14? Just to be sure, put your device in airplane mode before boarding. Then you know for sure that you do not accidentally call the emergency services. Then put your Apple Watch in airplane mode ‘just-to-be-sure’.

To turn on Airplane mode on your iPhone 14, swipe down at the top right to open Control Center. Then tap the airplane icon to turn on airplane mode.
