Demand for digital professionals falls by ten percent

For the first time since the pandemic began, the number of IT jobs advertised has fallen. This applies above all to the areas of online marketing and e-commerce.

For the first time since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, the number of available IT jobs has decreased. As the Handelsblatt reports, the demand for digital professionals has fallen by around ten percent.

The business newspaper relies on the digital job monitor. The Berlin index group searched all advertised positions in relevant job exchanges and 40,000 websites for the relevant job profiles.

Number of IT jobs falls for the first time in two years

Since 2020 the demand for IT professionals rose sharply, especially in the areas of cloud computing, online marketing and e-commerce. And experts in artificial intelligence, big data and fintech were also in high demand, along with other key areas.

Online marketing and e-commerce are particularly affected by the falling demand. In addition, interest in high-tech skills is also ebbing compared to the start of the year.

The reason for the decline in available IT jobs is the increasing risk of recession for growth and innovation projects that do not guarantee a quick return on investment.

Experts urge foresight

Despite the decline in IT jobs on offer, the debate about the sustainability of companies in particular gives hope that the labor market in the digital sector will recover.

Because around 28 percent of all companies would now rely on digital measurement of their carbon dioxide emissions to check their ecological footprint.

And professor for business information at the TU Darmstadt, Peter Buxmann, thinks it’s a mistake to put the brakes on investments in artificial intelligence now.

Many real-life examples show that AI increases efficiency in many companies, reduces emissions and generally helps executives to make better decisions.

In all these areas of application, there could be an increased demand for specialists in the future and the number of IT jobs could increase again.
