Later age
The average age at which women in the Netherlands become mothers for the first time was 24.3 years in 1970. In 2020 this has increased to 30.1 years. Women who become mothers later in life are more likely to rely on IVF treatments. “In the Netherlands, IVF treatments are reimbursed up to and including the age of 42. This concerns three IVF attempts under the basic insurance. There are also insurers that reimburse a fourth or even further treatment from the supplementary insurance,” says Mirjam Prins, health insurance expert at Independer.

Also, repair operations in men – in which the ends of the vas deferens are reconnected after sterilization – were much less common due to the postponed care: a total of 238 repair operations were performed in 2020, compared to an average of 360.
