Data leaks will be very expensive in 2023
Cybersecurity will be more than ever a major challenge for professionals and businesses in 2023. Attacks are expected to multiply and become even more ambitious.
The year 2022 was punctuated by hacking and data breach cases, 2023 should not be much different, and the situation should even get worse. According to cybersecurity specialist Acronis, the number of data breaches is expected to increase significantly next year.
One of the main sources of threats remains malicious email phishing, an already very popular practice which has increased by another 60% in 2022. Social networks are also becoming more and more dangerous and now represent around 3% of the set of attacks that go after our personal information.
5 million dollars on average: a data breach can be very expensive
The nature of stolen data is similarly evolving. Hackers are increasingly targeting passwords and other credentials, which can steal accounts and open doors to stealing other types of data.
“The past few months have proven to be more complex than ever, with new threats constantly emerging”, comments Candid Wüest, vice president of Acronis in charge of research. In addition to individuals, administrations and manufacturers are increasingly targeted by hackers, who no longer hesitate to attack large institutions.
“Organizations must prioritize comprehensive solutions when seeking to combat phishing and other hacking attempts. Attackers are constantly evolving their methods, now exploiting common security tools against us. This is the case with multi-factor authentication, which many companies rely on to protect themselves and their employees”adds the expert.
The average cost of a data breach is expected to reach $5 million, the report warns. Companies in the United States, Germany, Brazil or South Korea have been particularly affected. The construction, retail, real estate, professional services and finance sectors are particularly sensitive to this phenomenon.
