Completely flooded: Disney rival lands historic cinema flop
Disney had a massive flop this year with the animated film Elemental. Things aren’t going any better for the competition, however, because DreamWork’s new film also makes a huge crash landing. We give you all the important numbers.
New DreamWorks film flops massively
Last year, cult studio DreamWorks took part Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish struck a nerve. Not only was the film a real hit with critics (95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but it also made a strong showing at the international box office, grossing more than $484 million.
DreamWorks’ latest animated film, Ruby Dives, is a complete disaster. On the first weekend after the release, the colorful adventure was only able to bring in around 6 million US dollars in the USA – a historic negative record for the studiowhich has delighted film fans around the world since 1998.
Internationally, the film comes to almost 13 million US dollars at the box office, but with a budget of a good 70 million US dollars, the flop is almost perfect.

This is what the critics say about Ruby dives
In the comments under the linked Twitter post, disappointment is spreading among the fans. In her opinion, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, as the film is originally called, didn’t deserve such a meager box office.
The critics, however, are less enthusiastic about the animated film. On the review aggregator, Ruby dives has a mixed score of 49 percent. The Washington Post, for example, judges as follows:
“Ruby Dives is just charming enough, just exciting enough and just funny enough not to be a flop, but DreamWorks – the studio that has proven it can challenge Pixar when it comes to pushing the boundaries of animated film.” – decided to play it safe here.”
