Coincidence in Love: ‘My husband and I fell in love due to a power outage’

“In the summer of 2004, I was temporarily placed in a two-man bank branch, because the boy who normally worked there was at home due to heartbreak. That was Remco. His girlfriend had left him just before they were to be married. He was therefore unable to work for no less than three weeks. Pathetic, but also a bit dull I thought.

I was the only one in the region who could replace him and was disappointed that I now had to give up my days off for him. The weather was beautiful and I would have preferred to lie on the beach. My impression of this colleague was therefore not positive, to say the least. Conversely, Remco thought I was a curmudgeon. Once he came to deliver something to the office. I sat there with a grumpy face, because I blamed him for not laying on a beach bed at the time.

Power failure

We didn’t discover that we were both okay until later, when we occasionally worked together. A friendship developed. Nothing romantic at all. I was also still in a relationship at the time. The fact that we fell in love with each other really came out of the blue for both of us. We even needed a power outage for that.

On one of the days when I happened to have to work in Remco’s branch again, the power went out. In accordance with protocol, we closed the office. After all, the security no longer worked. To kill time, Remco suggested getting ice cream. And as crazy as it may sound, when he came back a little later with two ice creams with ‘Love passion’ written on them in large letters, I got a shock. I literally felt a spark. Remco denies it, but I suspect that he did not buy rockets or pear ice creams at the time, but that special love version to make something clear to me. He himself had felt a click much earlier.

For an hour and a half we sat snugly next to each other outside on the sidewalk, at the back of the building. We expressed our feelings, but immediately said that we were not going to do anything with it because I was bound. I didn’t want to give up my relationship even though I felt confused. The next day Remco wrote me a beautiful, emotional letter. He would distance himself from now on, didn’t want to be a relationship breaker.

Remco and I are still together, have two children and are incredibly happy together. And all thanks to a power outage. ”
