“Chrome for Android will soon serve as a key for 2FA, that’s how it works”
Google accounts that work with two-step verification or 2FA will soon be able to confirm their identity using the Chrome browser. It’s another additional feature that Google is adding and it should make TFA more accessible to users.
Chrome as 2FA method
Google is increasingly focusing on two-step verification for Google account protection, that’s for sure. The company recently activated two-step verification on accounts automatically. With 2FA you have to confirm your identity on the basis of an extra step. If you log in on your laptop, you can confirm on your Android phone that it is you who is logging in. According to Google, it is more secure than passwords in many situations, because they are often reused on different platforms.
9To5Googfle has discovered that Google is already testing the feature in Chrome Beta version 93 for Android. Your browser will then be used as a place where you can confirm your identity when you log in. You will simply be asked in Chrome whether you have just logged in and you can confirm by answering ‘Yes’. It’s yet another way to make 2FA work, and that’s a good thing.
Although this method is now being tested on Chrome for phones, 2FA for Chrome seems particularly interesting to us on PCs. Your Android phone can already serve as a security key, but it will be useful if you can also use a PC that is logged in to Chrome with your Google account as an authentication method. It is important that all devices with Chrome have synchronization turned on.
availabilty
We expect the feature for Chrome to be available soon in the stable Chrome 93 version for Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chrome OS. Do you use 2FA with your Google account? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
