CEO Square Enix expressed his disappointment at Marvel’s Avengers -apkrig
Like many other companies, Square Enix is currently announcing financial results, reversing the past months and providing hints on what we can expect from this Japanese publisher in the future. While taking stock of the successes or failures of the projects that Square Enix has recently added, in addition to the remake of Final Fantasy VII or Bravely Default II, Marvel’s Avengers from Crystal Dynamics also took place. However, Square President Enix Yosuke Macuda managed to avoid it, despite the fact that many media outlets make his statements a sensation and distort what was really said in the annual report. Macuda does not blame the authors of the game for failure, as it might seem, especially from the rapidly spreading report of the Video Games Chronicle magazine, but only explains that for other projects, Square Enix will have to choose more carefully which studies to entrust to each project.
We managed to overcome the problems and release the game, but unfortunately it was not as successful as we would like, says CEO Square Enix
“I would like to note that Marvel’s Avengers was an ambitious project in which we used a live service model. In the final phase of development, we overcame a number of unexpected difficulties, including the need to move to work from home due to a pandemic, “Macuda puts in context the situation around the failed title in the summary of individual games for the past year. “We managed to overcome the problems and release the game, but unfortunately it was not as successful as we would like,” he confirms his general conviction and confronts the unpleasant situation. As for the Crystal Dynamics developers, their name will not be mentioned in Macud’s statement, but CEO Square Enix points out that the use of a live service model has highlighted many of the problems that the company may face in the future. “It will be necessary to select game designs that match the unique features and capabilities of our studios, resp. development teams, ”Jósuke Macuda explained, and it certainly doesn’t seem public sunk by Marvel’s Avengers.
On the contrary, it is clear from his statement that the management of Square Enix made a mistake when approving the Avengers on the mentioned model and at the same time entrusting the development to people from Crystal Dynamics, who had no experience with it to such an extent. After all, it was Macuda himself who spoke in an interview with Games Beat magazine in 2019 that he was convinced of the perfect symbiosis of the studio and the Marvel’s Avengers concept, so if he was to talk about any guilt, he would have to focus only on himself. In the long run, therefore, this means that rather than cutting off Crystal Dynamics from the development of other games, titles that are more like the rest of their portfolio will come into play, which is all but negative news. On the other hand, Macuda confirms that they are not giving up on the live service model either, as they see potential and growing importance in the entire video game industry, but it will be up to the months to decide how to approach this Square Enix model.
On the account of Marvel’s Avengers, however, we can remind you that the game will eventually give up paid XP boosts, which went into the game after reworking the entire system of progression. The developers apologized for not responding earlier and removed Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors as paid items on offer. However, it will still be possible to get these boosts as a reward directly in the game, and those who already own the boosters can of course use them.
