CEO reacts to accusations of cheating in benchmarks
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau posted a message on his Twitter account. He invites his community to read a post on his brand’s forum. The latter explains why the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro do not work normally with technical benchmarks. Are we on the eve of a new scandal? No. Here’s why.
Earlier this year, we published the tests of the last two high-end smartphones from OnePlus: the OnePlus 9 and the Oneplus 9 Pro. Two different testers performed these tests. You can also find our live question-answer session on our YouTube channel (and at the end of this article). Among the common points noted between the two smartphones, we find the power of the platform.

At the heart of this experience, we find the Snapdragon 888, associated with OxygenOS and 8 or 12 GB of RAM. The two smartphones achieve good scores on certain benchmarks. But, on others, the performances are not that breathtaking. Some testers actually found that the operating system enabled certain profiles that changed the behavior of the smartphone.
OnePlus CEO communicates on suspicion of cheating
And that obviously did not please everyone. So much so that OnePlus had to publish a post on its forum to explain its choices. And so that as many people as possible are aware, Pete Lau even took to Twitter to share the link to the post. What does the latter say? It simply confirms that OnePlus establishes a list of applications with which OxygenOS is ” optimized “. The aim is twofold: to reduce heat emission and improve autonomy, while guaranteeing a very good level of comfort for the user.
I hope this clarifies some things: No, we don’t optimize OnePlus phones for benchmarking scores. We optimize them for real use. https://t.co/4HOmhP9DrB

There is some good and some not so good in this ad. Let’s start with the good. It is always very useful to optimize the system to ensure a smooth experience and good battery life. there is no doubt. This is all the more true with the Snapdragon 888 which is not only energy consuming, but also calorigenic. We have noticed this ourselves, as well with the Mi 11, the Mi 11i, the Legion Duel 5 or the ZenFone 8. The management of its heat is difficult. And it is important that a builder pay attention to this.
Optimizing is good, but giving choice is just as important
There are also some not so good. As for Apple which decided, unilaterally, to reduce the performance of the chipsets of its old iPhones to avoid too much loss of autonomy, OnePlus decides to reduce the performance of its smartphones with certain applications. It may be justified. This decision seems to go in the direction of the user. But the best is always to give the choice.
Remember that this is not the first time that the Oppo group has been singled out for adapting the performance of a smartphone with benchmarks. Very recently, the Realme GT was banned from the AnTuTu rankings. Three years ago, the Find X suffered the same punishment from 3D Mark.
