Can Apple still do it?

Work on the successor to the current MacBook Air is progressing. Most recently, however, a report by Apple insider and expert Ming-Chi Kuo worried, according to which the new M2 chip no longer makes it into the housing of the new mobile computer. The latest sources contradict that, Apple could still pack it. Hope is spreading.

Update from March 11, 2022: Unspecified sources from colleagues at 9to5Mac expressly contradict insider and expert Ming-Chi Kuo, according to this the MacBook Air should get the new M2 chip that is currently being developed – So Apple could still manage it (Source: 9to5Mac). The computer is being worked on under the internal ID “J413” and will definitely be equipped with the M2, which in turn is based on the Apple A15. The construction includes 8 cores again, but the M2 should then have 10 powerful graphics cores.

Also still in the pipeline would be a MacBook Pro with a 13-inch display in the well-known design and M2 chip. Exciting here: Apple is probably considering omitting the “Pro” and simply launching this computer as a “MacBook”. An exact release date for both mobile computers is not mentioned. A performance later in the year can be assumed.

original item:

At the Apple event in March, Apple held back with news about mobile Macs, only the Mac Studio was presented together with the Apple Studio Display – a very potent desktop computer with visual borrowings from the Mac mini, but with a clear professional alignment. But the current year will also be with us Novelties in the MacBooks grant. The most eagerly awaited: The MacBook Air 2022.

MacBook Air 2022: M1, but no M2 – expert makes a decision

Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most well-known and reliable insiders, devotes his latest prediction to said calculator (source: Ming Chi Kuo via MacRumors). He first confirms a number of already known assumptions from the rumor scene:

  • Completely new design – flat and angular, based on the MacBook Pro.
  • More colors, not unlike the iMac selection.
  • No mini LED screen, this feature is reserved for the Pro models.

And then the great news follows, because instead of the long suspected M2, there is actually still only one Apple M1 in the case. So not a new Apple chip for the airhead among MacBooks after all? Kuo is sure of that and repeats the statement to his MacRumors colleagues. However, he hints that this could be a modified version of the existing M1. Whether that could mean an M1 Pro remains unanswered. But that would be rather inappropriate, after all, the chip belongs in the MacBook Pro by its name, not in the MacBook Air.

The latest mobile Mac innovation from Apple:

In the end, there is a risk of a big disappointment here, after all, the industry has so far assumed the Apple M2, i.e. the successor to the first in-house Mac chip. Nothing could come of it now and customers would have to bury their hopes.

We can expect something like this with the MacBook Air 2022:

How long do we have to wait for Apple’s presentation?

And when should the performance take place? Kuo speaks of the Mass production of the MacBook Air 2022 in the late second quarter or in the third quarter of the year. In other words, production will start in the summer. Apple could then show the computer in late summer or early autumn – we assume August or September.
