Better to mine cryptocurrencies than pick strawberries in Poland

Alexander Lukashenko is one of those leaders who are very open to crypto currencies. That may have a lot to do with the fact that he and the country he governs are affected by international sanctions. As western politicians never tire of emphasizing, cryptocurrencies are part of the portfolio of financial criminals from all over the world due to their pseudonymous character. States can also take advantage of this under international pressure. And while foreign currency can be difficult to get hold of, Bitcoin only takes a couple of powerful mining rigs.

So it is not surprising that Alexander Lukashenko wants to convert Belarus into a country of crypto mining. The president is convinced that there is enough surplus electricity and there are enough industrial sites that can be converted into mining facilities. The state should take advantage of this and mine crypto currencies.

But the people living in Belarus should – if Lukashenko has his way – deal with the issue. It would be better to mine Bitcoin in your own country than to pick strawberries in Poland, the Russian news agency quotes RBC the President of Belarus.

Lukashenko made these statements on the occasion of the opening of a new fertilizer factory. The new Belaruskali plant mines potash salts and processes them into products based on potassium carbonate. Belarus, with a market share of 20 percent, is one of the most important potash fertilizer manufacturers in the world, but has to face growing restrictions in international trade and is therefore actively looking for alternatives.

Cryptocurrencies have been actively desired in Belarus since 2017. The local crypto industry is even temporarily tax-exempt. Citizens can use cryptocurrencies without being restricted. In addition to Belarus, Cuba and El Salvador had recently discovered their interest in crypto currencies.
