Berlin startup develops the world’s largest audio system for the Sphere in Las Vegas
The audio system is located at the new Sphere venue in Las Vegas, according to a joint press release. Holoplot reports on a patented “3D Audio Beamforming Technology” and “Wave Field Synthesis Technology”. In this way, the startup controls sound in a similar way to light.
With this unique combination of audio software and hardware, each of the up to 20,000 guests in the spherical venue gets the same sound experience in headphone quality, regardless of their seating position. It was developed together with “Sphere Studios” (part of MSG Entertainment’s editor’s note) for the new venue The Sphere in Las Vegas.
“3D Audio Beamforming Technology”: Revolution planned
Editor’s Recommendations
The audio technology delivers crystal-clear concert sound through 3D audio beamforming and wave field synthesis technology to every single seat. In addition, the Berliners write that thanks to the precise and tailor-made sound played, even guests sitting next to each other can experience a completely different audio experience with individual content. With the innovation one wants to redefine the global professional sound market.
According to Allied Market Research, the market will be worth a total of 32.2 billion US dollars – and that by 2031. According to the press release, the Sphere will open to visitors for the first time on September 29 with the first of 25 performances by the Irish rock band U2.
According to the manufacturers, the innovation is the world’s largest, fully integrated concert audio system, which is fundamentally revolutionizing immersive sound experiences.
“Sphere Immersive Sound” was specially developed for Sphere’s unique, curved interior. According to the manufacturers, it consists of around 1,600 permanently installed X1 Matrix Array loudspeakers and includes a total of 167,000 individually amplified loudspeaker drivers.
In addition, the system uses 3D audio beamforming and wave field synthesis technology that are fundamentally changing the way audio is reproduced in large venues. The result is controlled, consistent and crystal clear concert quality sound for the entire audience of up to 20,000 people.
The entire sound system is completely hidden behind the almost 15,000 square meter LED surface within the sphere. The algorithm-based software compensates for any loss of quality that would result from the LED screen. The result is crystal-clear, unaffected sound and an unrestricted LED surface that extends spherically around the audience – a combination of auditory and visual components that, according to the startup, creates a fully immersive experience.
“From the beginning, we have focused on radically transforming audio technology and rethinking the underlying physics of sound reproduction as we know it,” Roman Sick, CEO of Holoplot, is quoted as saying in the press release. “Working with Sphere Studios for Sphere Immersive Sound has been a truly exciting opportunity for our team – it has been a challenge to push the boundaries of our technology on an unprecedented scale and create such a revolutionary listening experience.”
According to the startup, the system was first installed and used last summer at the Beacon Theater in New York. The system was further adapted and scaled for Sphere Las Vegas.
Patented 4D technology also appears in Las Vegas – such as haptic infrasonic seats and various atmospheric effects such as warm breezes, suggestive scents and changing temperatures to create multi-sensory experiences. This takes the entertainment experience to a whole new level.
In addition to the U2 concerts, the Sphere Experience “Postcard from Earth” directed by Darren Aronofsky will also premiere on October 6th. Tickets are available at thespherevegas.com.
