Belgian digital ID app Itsme now launched in the Netherlands

You can now also log in to us and confirm your identity via the Itsme app. The app is already very popular in Belgium where it is integrated in apps from banks, providers and in government services. Itsme wants to distinguish itself from DigID and iDIN by offering additional services.

The name of ‘Itsme’ actually sums up the essence well. It is a free app that allows you to identify yourself, log in, confirm transactions and sign documents. Itsme is used by 6 million Belgians and the service has been integrated by parties from both the public and private sectors. An expansion to the Netherlands is part of Itsme’s European expansion plans, the company says in a press release.

Itsme allows you to place a qualified digital signature that has the same legal value as a digital signature. The app works together with parties such as Adobe Sign, DocuSign, Evidos and Signicat. The first Dutch partnerships are currently being set up within the private domain. Oyens & Van Eeghen will be the first to offer Itsme for its Dutch customers. Government bodies can also further integrate Itsme into their secure environment and the municipality of Rotterdam will be the first to embrace the platform.

Distinguishing from DigID and iDIN

The app claims to differentiate itself from the DigID and iDIN in the wider range of features it offers, as well as ease of use. You create an Itsme account digitally by reading your NFC ID or passport and then choose a unique PIN code. You can also log in, confirm transactions or identify yourself by scanning your fingerprint on your phone. You can also discover how to create an Itsme account in the video below.

An action is only performed after the user’s approval, which means that the user always retains control over his data. An overview of all performed actions can always be found in the app. The sharing of data with Itsme is in line with the AVG guidelines and it complies with the guidelines of the banking sector, the PSD2 and AML. The app has been recognized as electronic identification at the highest guarantee level of eIDAS since December 2019.
