Sometimes you come across something, of which you suddenly hear that half the world is completely under its spell. The undersigned has that a bit with Wordle. Not insanely long ago I heard something about it and thought ‘gosh, funny’. Now it suddenly turns out to be a big hype.

We take you into the world of Wordle for a moment. At least, world: it’s actually a very simple browser game. Go to Wordle’s website and you’ll see the basics. Six chances, five letters and you must form valid English words. Each letter that is correct turns green for the next guess. Every yellow letter is correct, but is in the wrong place. Who now hears a bell ringing: it is indeed a kind of very simple version of our favorite Dutch game show: Lingo.

And suddenly Wordle exploded. It is the brainchild of American programmer Josh Wardle. Things didn’t start rolling like that until Wardle added the option to share your results online. When it becomes a “do you think you’re better than me” contest, more people will see the results and then play the game themselves. Things really took off when the New York Times bought the game from Wardle early this year for more than a million dollars. They now offer Wordle on their own website, where you can play one Wordle daily.

As mentioned, Wordle is a well-known recipe for us Dutch, because we have been looking at Lingo for decades. Wordle is the essence of Lingo, without the ball pit and a tense finale. The rise of Wordle is most likely the reason that the rights of Lingo were bought by American broadcaster CBS. They will broadcast the program in the US with RuPaul Charles as presenter.
