Apple Watch saves woman after fall
In the United States, an Apple Watch saved a woman’s life after she fell unconscious to the ground. The woman was staying in a hotel when she suddenly felt pressure on her chest. Not long after calling a friend about the strange pressure on her chest, she fell unconscious to the floor. Fortunately, the fall was recognized by the fall detection on her Apple Watch.

After the fall, the Apple Watch no longer registered movements, so the watch immediately sent a warning to the emergency number. This allowed the emergency services to take her to the hospital in time to perform surgery. Fall detection is therefore a very useful function, which can even save lives.
Do you also have an Apple Watch? So make sure you have this feature turned on. We explain how to enable fall detection.
Turn on fall detection on your Apple Watch
Apple launched the fall detection feature a few years ago. If the Apple Watch SE, the Apple Watch Series 4 or later thinks it has detected a fall, you will immediately be notified. The watch taps on your wrist in the event of a fall and plays an alarm to notify you of the fall detection. If your Watch detects that you haven’t moved for a minute after the fall, emergency services will be called in.
By first reporting a fall detection, you have enough time to click away the warning. This way, the emergency services are not unnecessarily informed if your Apple Watch incorrectly registers a fall. You turn on fall detection in the following way:
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone;
- Go to ‘SOS emergency notification’;
- Turn on the switch behind fall detection;
- Choose ‘Always on’ or ‘Enabled during workouts’.
When you enable fall detection, you choose when your Apple Watch can register a fall. Apple recommends choosing “Enabled during workouts” if you are more physically active to reduce false detections. Do you still want your Apple Watch to be able to recognize a fall at all times? Then go for ‘Always on’.
