Apple reveals the release period of the iPhone update
Shortly after the release of iOS 15, Apple announced that it was working on the next service update (iOS 15.1) for the iPhone. After weeks of development, the final release period is now available.
Update from October 19, 2021: Apple not only presented new MacBook Pros for yesterday’s event and announced the release date of macOS Monterey, including the so-called “Release Candidate” from iOS 15.1 was distributed to the developers.
Means: The work on the iPhone update is finished and Apple is virtually revealing the release period of iOS 15.1. So we can count on it in the next week. With a little luck, Apple will release the update for iPhone and iPad at the same time as macOS Monterey on Monday, October 25th. The release may also follow a little later, but certainly the 43rd calendar week should in any case be.

Shortly after the release of iOS 15, Apple is already distributing the first beta version of iOS 15.1 to paying developers. The first major service update for the new operating system is already in progress. As expected, not only iPhones but also iPads were thought of – iPadOS 15.1 was also announced (source: Apple).
iOS 15.1: New functions for iPhone and iPad
What’s new in the iPhone and iPad update? Apart from the expected bug fixes, features were found that Apple promised us for iOS 15, but have so far been withheld. In detail:
- Integration of SharePlay: This allows users to listen to music together with Apple Music via FaceTime. The same works with TV shows and movies from Apple TV + and other streaming services. Particularly clever: your own screen can be shared – useful for assistance and more.
- Vaccination certificate directly in Apple’s wallet: Less interesting for us in this country, because only so-called “SMART Health Cards” are supported in the USA. However, German users can use a trick.
- Announce a call: It can be found as a new icon in the settings.
- Lossless Audio and Dolby Atmos with Spatial Audio: The HomePod 15.1 Beta adds support for the HomePod and HomePod mini.
SharePlay was originally announced for iOS 15, as seen in the video, but now comes with iOS 15.1:
Possible release date of iOS 15.1
It is not yet possible to foresee when the iOS 15.1 update will be completed. But a look back provides clues:
- iOS 14: September 16, 2020, iOS 14.1: October 20, 2020
- iOS 13: September 19, 2019, iOS 13.1: September 24, 2019
- iOS 12: September 17, 2018, iOS 12.1: October 30, 2018
- iOS 11: September 19, 2017, iOS 11.1: October 31, 2017
- iOS 10: September 13, 2016, iOS 10.1: October 24, 2016
With the exception of iOS 13.1, the first major update was released actually always in the middle or at the end of October. So we can probably expect about a month until the release of iOS 15.1.
