Apple launches self-service repair for iPhone and Mac
Apple will allow self-service repairs in the future. However, not all models can be repaired by yourself. However, this will be possible with some iPhones and Macs.
Smartphones have been a constant companion in many people’s everyday lives, and not just since the Corona pandemic. In Germany, for example, around 62.6 million people a smartphone, in 2023 it should already be 68.6 million.
Of course, it’s all the more annoying when your beloved pocket computer breaks. A repair is usually expensive and must be carried out by a certified dealer.
So far, this applied primarily to products from Apple that could not be reacted to independently. But with the Apple self-service repair, anyone can screw on iPhone or MacBook in the future.

How does Apple Self-Service Repair work?
On the Apple support page Self-service repair is now also available. According to Apple, however, this only makes sense for certain people and outside of the warranty.
Self-service repair is intended for people who have the knowledge and experience needed to repair electronic equipment.
Above all, “experience with the complexity of repairing electronic devices” is required for this. Those who dare will have access to original Apple components, tools and repair manuals.
How does the ordering process work?
Apple commissioned Service Parts or Tools GmbH to carry out the self-service repairs. This is also the company that runs it Self Service Repair Store for the Apple products.
Here users can either order parts and tools or view repair manuals for specific Apple devices.
Apple recommends that if you are attempting a repair yourself, you should first study the manual to “become familiar with the parts, tools, and materials you may need, depending on the model and type of repair.”
What Devices Can Apple Lovers Fix?
However, users cannot repair all Apple devices on their own. Because in the repair store there are only a few models to choose from.
Customers can choose between spare parts for iPhone and Mac. But you can also just order the tool.
So far, only the iPhone models 12 and 13 and the third generation of the SE are available for repair. For the Mac, these are the MacBook Air (M1, 2020) and the MacBooks Pro with a 13-inch screen (M1, 2020), 14 and 16-inch screen (2021).
After entering the serial number, customers can then choose what they want to repair on their device. With a MacBook Air, you can choose from battery, display, speakers or replacing keycaps, among other things.
