Apple Keynote October 18: summary of what should be announced

Apple is organizing a keynote on October 18, 2021, which comes a month after the one in which we had the iPhone 13, the iPad mini 6 and the iPad 9. The October one will have a particular focus on Macs.

14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro

This should be the main announcement of Apple’s keynote: the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Both models should be entitled to a new general design. This includes a Mini-LED display (with potentially a 120Hz display) and reduced bezels all around. In addition, Apple would apparently choose to put a notch on its laptop, like iPhones. But that wouldn’t mean Face ID, which may come as a surprise.

On the other hand, the new 14 and inch MacBook Pros would be entitled to an Apple chip. It will be over with Intel processors. There has long been talk of an Apple M1X chip, but it could ultimately be M1 Pro and M1 Max. In addition, Apple is reportedly offering 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage by default. We would also find a 1080p webcam, a new mains charger and the return of the MagSafe port, the HDMI port and the SD card reader. Last point: the Touch Bar should disappear.

AirPods 3

Apple’s keynote should be an opportunity to discover the AirPods 3 if we are to believe some rumors circulating. These headphones, which have been talked about for months, would more or less resemble the AirPods Pro. On the other hand, you should not expect to have the features of AirPods Pro, such as active noise reduction.

Mac mini

A new Mac mini is expected to be announced. It would be entitled to a new general design with a Plexiglas-style top, four Thunderbolt / USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, one Ethernet port and one HDMI port. The cable to connect to the mains would be similar to that found with the iMac M1.

Under the hood, expect the same chip that will be found in the new MacBook Pro (M1X, M1 Pro or M1 Max, whatever the name given by Apple).

Release date for macOS Monterey

Apple should take advantage of its October 18 keynote to announce a release date for macOS Monterey. We already know that the operating system for Mac will arrive sometime in the fall, but without further details. We should have a date at the conference.

Something else ?

The 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, AirPods 3, Mac mini, and the release date for macOS Monterey seem like a near certainty. But the rest are not. We shouldn’t expect to see a new MacBook Air (it would arrive in 2022), just as we shouldn’t expect a new iPad Air (also expected in 2022), AirPods Pro (for 2022), a successor to the ’27-inch iMac or Mac Pro.
