Apple is working on a more compact Macbook Air with Magsafe

No time right now?

Apple is preparing a major redesign for its Macbook Air. It should be thinner and get a Magsafe connection.

2021 seems to be the year of the major Mac remodeling at Apple. With its own Apple silicon processors, the group is apparently also making major changes to the design of its Macs. In addition to a rumored redesign of the Macbook Pros and iMacs, reliable sources suggest that the MacBook Air will also be refreshed.

Macbook Air should be thinner and more compact

Like the well-connected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman want to have learned from insider circles, a new version of the Macbook Air should appear in the second half of 2021 at the earliest. It is to be sold as a high-end variant alongside the Macbook Air with Apple’s M1 chip, which was introduced in November 2020.

As recently reported about the MacBook Pro, the new Air should contain Apple’s Magsafe charging technology and a new generation of in-house Mac processors. The upcoming Air will also have two USB 4 ports, there is no talk of the return of an SD card reader.

According to Gurman, Apple is considering making the Macbook Air more compact while retaining the 13-inch screen by shrinking the bezel around the display. The current model weighs 1.3 kilograms and measures 1.61 centimeters at its thickest point. In the past few months there have been rumors of a revival of the 12-inch Macbook – but by reducing the bezels, the Air could possibly become as compact as the model discontinued in 2019. In addition to the 13-inch version, Apple is thinking of adding a 15-inch version of the Air to its range, they say.

Gurman has also received more details about the next generation of the MacBook Pro, which should especially please loyal Mac fans: The company is probably planning to reintroduce the SD card slot, which was removed from the Pro models in 2016, so that users of their memory cards from digital cameras without be able to read in additional resources. According to Gurman, the heavily criticized touchbar will be deleted – the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently reported.

iMacs will soon have Face-ID

Apple is also working on the integration of cellular connections and Face ID facial recognition for Macs. However, the two functions are not to be expected in the short term. Face ID support for iMacs was originally planned for this year’s redesign of the iMac, but according to Gurman it has been postponed until further notice.
