Anyone who visits Apple’s App Store is rubbing their eyes at the moment. A little-known app has stuck itself at the top of the charts and is even ahead of classics like WhatsApp or Google Maps. The reason for its success is simple – and illegal.

It’s a well-known phenomenon: Newcomers storm Apple’s App Store at regular intervals. It is often new social networks or photo applications that trigger a brief hype. All the more surprising that of all things a browser is currently particularly popular with iPhone users. If you think of Google Chrome now, you are wrong.

Dezor storms the charts in the App Store

dezor is the name of the browser that is swimming at the top of the App Store and has even left WhatsApp and other app heavyweights behind. However, the browser is not particularly fast or offers other functions that Chrome, Safari and Co. do not have.

The secret of its success only becomes apparent at second glance: Dezor includes a media player that allows access to films and series via a special website. This also includes content from Netflix or Disney+ that can otherwise only be viewed with a paid subscription. Dezor became popular through videos on TikTok.

Streaming copyrighted content is illegal

Dezor is not illegal per se, but viewing copyrighted content is. Contrary to popular belief it is streaming is also illegal, not just downloading. This goes back to a ruling by the ECJ in 2017. We therefore advise against using Dezor only to view copyrighted material.
