Android Auto app for smartphones is really almost stopping now

The last days of the ‘Android Auto for smartphones’ app are really numbered. Google shows in a message that the app will soon stop. Google may also want to roll out the Driving Mode for the Google Assistant more widely.

Not everyone has a car with Android Auto built in, which is why there is Android Auto for smartphones. You will then see the familiar interface of Android Auto on your phone screen. Google announced in 2019 that the app would make way for the new driving experience of the Google Assistant and now the wide rollout of that feature seems to be getting a lot closer.

According to 9TGo5Google, users of Android Auto for smartphones will receive a notification that the app will soon stop. “Android Auto for smartphones will soon stop working,” reads the app’s home screen. It is not yet known when the app will stop working.

Alternative coming

Google has previously stopped the operation of the app for phones with Android 12, but now all other devices with an older version are next. Still, Android 12 users didn’t get a real alternative yet. Google wants to give Assistant smart car functions, such as a custom interface for Maps navigation and music services, but the so-called Driving Mode of the Assistant is not forthcoming. It is available to a small group of users and you cannot activate it yourself in a roundabout way.

The end of Android Auto for smartphones may also herald a broader roll-out of the Driving Mode of the Assistant. Google will also make the new Android Auto interface for infotainment screens available this summer, so it seems logical that the interface for your phone will follow.
