After use, these plastic bottles are building material for houses

The decade that has just started will probably be shaped by one thing in particular: sustainability. In order to mitigate the effects of climate change in the long term and to give future generations a life worth living, we must act today and deal better with our planet. Therefore, some innovations and ideas are needed to turn current problems into opportunities.

In Brooklyn (New York), for example, an alternative solution for plastic bottles has been tried out. Because, especially abroad, bottles often end up in the garbage and are burned instead of the raw materials being used for a second time. So-called “Friendship Bottles” can now be used to offer outside catering guests a protected area.

Because after the contents of the bottle have been consumed, the bottles can be stacked and connected to form small shelters. This also works precisely because the structure of the containers is designed in such a way that a greater weight can be carried. So you add a few more materials and a window to the bottles and restaurant visitors are looking forward to a cozy shelter.

In the aforementioned Brooklyn restaurant, the small huts have been standing since April, and even the most recent hurricane-like storms of the past few weeks could not harm the bottle houses. So restaurateurs could put a durable structure in front of the door.

In the future, the friendship bottles are to be used to create further structures. At least that’s what the developers of the concept are planning, proving that bottles don’t always have to end up in the trash. In order to continue using the daily consumption of plastic bottles in such structures, it would at least need many other building shapes and types.

Own opinion:

Climate change requires interesting new concepts and ideas. With the friendship bottles, a concept has emerged that could set an example and give plastic bottles a long-term use. Nevertheless, further measures are necessary, after all, not all bottle types will be designed according to the required design overnight.
