Adobe Firefly: AI gives powerful capabilities

Have you always wanted to let a dinosaur walk across Dam Square? Or brush your ex out of a photo? Then Adobe Firefly is exactly what you are looking for.

What exactly is Adobe Firefly?

The AI that Photoshop uses comes from Google. This is the first time that it is possible for outsiders to get acquainted with this very powerful graphical AI. It’s Google, so you quickly run into a block if you use forbidden terms.

You can best think of Adobe Firefly as an AI tool integrated into Photoshop. You choose a certain part of a photo and select it. You can then give it a different content with a text prompt. The tool works especially well with small, subtle changes. For example, you can have a yellow stripe drawn in the middle of a road, insert northern lights and add a reflective water surface.

But you get the best results when you make absurdist art with it. Apparata managed to secure a beta account and started tinkering with the tool. We used a photo of the famous Meteor Crater in Arizona as a victim. This crater was created about 50,000 years ago when a large meteorite impacted and has a diameter of about one kilometer. Highly recommended if you’re in the area. We chose this photo for our Adobe Firefly experiments because a crater lends itself to many different types of content. You can see the results of our artistic vandalism below.

Meteor crater becomes volcanic crater

Adobe Firefly

A meteor crater looks a bit like a volcano crater. It was therefore not too difficult for the Adobe Firefly AI to transform the meteor crater into an Etna-like pool of lava. Puffs of smoke are missing because they were not explicitly mentioned in the prompt. Still, it all looks quite realistic.

The smallest sea in the world

A raging sea in a crater? Leave that to the Adobe Firefly Ai. There are many pictures of a troubled sea, the high waves crashing on a rocky shore, and on which the Ai has been trained. Inventing a sea where there used to be a bone-dry crater is therefore a piece of cake for the AI.

Marina in the crater

We are, after all, in America, where the dollar is king. So, of course, if there is a lake, soon there will be a resort, where tourists are milked to the last dime. Here too, the Adobe Firefly Ai finally does well after several failed experiments. It looks quite realistic.

Manhattan in the crater with Adobe Firefly

If you want to generate something that differs significantly from the rest of the image, the AI tends to adapt too much to the environment. So if you ‘order’ skyscrapers, the AI will deliver piles of rocks, because they are most likely in a rocky desert. So you have to be very explicit. It wasn’t until I entered “Manhattan style skyscrapers” that things finally started to take off with Crater City.

Access Adobe Firefly

At the moment, at the end of May 2023, Adobe Firefly is in beta. If you register as a tester, you can temporarily use this advanced system for free. Use this link for this. If you read this article later, Adobe Firefly is probably only available via a paid version. Hopefully this online version of Adobe Firefly will still be available. You can always use a trial version of Adobe.
