MOTHERS

Herman van Veen writes about his mother and grandmother. About his daughter who became a mother. About his first violin teacher, with whom he got a mother. About the mother figures in his life.

In Mothers Herman van Veen goes back to the Kievitdwarsstraat in Utrecht where he was born. He writes about his mother and her mother, but also about how his daughter became a mother and about his first violin teacher, with whom he got a mother. About where you come from, how it shapes you and how you stay connected with it.

Mother gives kisses on sore spots. Mumbles: “You’ll have to be careful and honey, your father had that too.” Mother washes your hands, teaches you to tie knots, tie shoelaces, turn over dimes. When she is angry she always has lights in her eyes. Whispers, “Never listen to good advice except mine.” When she’s sad, she wears sunglasses. A bird once flew out of her mouth. Then it becomes quiet in the Hema.
