‘Fitbit in court: watches cause burns’
Google will soon be in court over a subpoena by two Fitbit users. They suffered burns from their watches overheating, and Fitbit did not address the issue. The overheating is said to occur in many different wearables of the brand.
Fibit lawsuit
Two owners of a Fitbit Versa Lite and a Versa 2 have sued the manufacturer of their smartwatch in the United States. Fitbit recalled 1.7 million units of its Ionic smartwatch in March due to overheating issues. According to The Verge, there were 78 reports of burns.
Versa watch owners now believe that overheating issues in Fitbit wearables are much more widespread than Google makes out. The court documents cite the following Fitbits: Versa, Versa 2, Versa 3, Charge 4, Versa Lite, Ionic, Sense, Alta HR, Inspire, Inspire HR, Inspire 2, and Blaze. Each time, the prosecutors describe a concrete case of overheating with the watch in question, often with accompanying images of burns.
Swept under the rug
The prosecutors accuse Google not only that the above watches can cause burns, but also that Google sweeps those problems under the rug. Fitbit support staff would refer to users’ personal hygiene, other than issues with the wearables. In addition, it also takes a long time before a helpdesk employee responds, according to the accusation.
In addition, this lawsuit must also ensure that all Ionic users receive a full refund of the purchase price of their watch. At this point, Google would deliberately make it difficult for Ionic owners to recover the amount. We’ve asked Fitbit for a response.
