Waze has special Retro mode in 70s, 80s or 90s style

Thanks to an update to Waze, you can completely customize the app in a retro app. You can personalize the Voices of your car and also the voice of the navigation. You can drive a hippie van or a racing car, while an aerobics teacher from the 80s gives you directions.

Waze Retro Mode

Many car drivers have sworn by Waze for years and the app is now getting nice personalization functions, Waze announced in a blog post. You can now dress up your app in a 70’s, 80’s or 90’s theme with Retro Mode.

If you want to personalize your Waze experience, you can choose a different picture for your vehicle, the mood you share or you can choose a different voice for the navigation. All voices for the route guidance are in English and you can choose from: a DJ from the 70s, an aerobics teacher from the 80s and a pop star from the 90s.

retro mood

Moods are a way to share your mood on the map with other Waze users. Although a mood can sometimes also be practical if you announce a traffic jam or road works with a picture. The moods of Retro Mode are especially fun and they display typical objects from each time period. Think of a lava lamp from the 1970s, a battery-powered radio from the 1980s, and an old desktop computer from the 1990s.

User criticism

Still, the Retro mode is rather lukewarm by part of the Waze community. On the social news app Reddit, users underline that they would much rather have seen other improvements in the app. Many believe that the development of Waze has slowed down since the app came under the wing of Google and that is also criticism expressed last year by the former Waze CEO.

What do you think, do you think the retro mode is a nice addition, or would you have liked to see other improvements in Waze? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
