the novelties of January 2021 and our selection

New films, series and cartoons for the month of January

So of course the list is not exhaustive, but we have nevertheless made a little rundown on the Netflix releases for this month of January with the most promising content… If you want a complete list of releases, you will find it at our colleagues of Netflix-News.

Delicatessen (January 1)

It’s hard to tell you about this masterpiece without spoiling the pleasure of discovering it. It is a rather dark film with a very particular atmosphere masterfully orchestrated by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (City of Lost Children). We will find Dominique Pinon, Jean-Claude Dreyfus, Karin Viard and Ticky Holgado. A must see.

Asphalt Burning (January 2)

This Norwegian film frankly seems to be going all over the place: a car enthusiast sees his wedding annulled and then gets challenged by an old acquaintance. A crazy “road movie” that ends on the legendary circuit of Nürburgring in Germany. Not the movie of the century, but it’s not every day that you get to see a Norwegian film so …

Tony Parker: The Final Shot (January 6)

And a documentary on Tony Parker! The first Frenchman to have won an NBA title, “TP” even won 4 with the San Antonio Spurs and he is also 2013 European champion with the France team and the first European to win a MVP for an NBA final. An extraordinary athlete seen by his friends and peers.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (January 8)

A very good “reboot” of Spiderman starring Tom Holland, Michael Keaton and Robert Downey Jr. This is the MCU’s 16th film and the fourth in Phase III (watch between Black panther and Doctor Strange). The basic story is known, but in this version of Spiderman, Peter Parker is younger and he is helped by Tony Stark in his superhero “education”. Tom Holland is a little annoying in his role as a nerd, but less so than Andrew Garfield.

Dark Hours (January 15)

This 2017 film shows the period between the coming to power of Winston Churchill and the internal struggle within the Conservative Party between the supporters of a negotiated peace with Nazi Germany and the supporters of “Never”. A very nice film about a historical character little known here and a Gary Oldman very inspired in the role of the British Prime Minister.

Snowpiercer – Season 2 (January 26)

This series, which is in fact the adaptation of a French comic from the 80s, is experiencing its second season on Netflix in January (one episode per week). With the end of the first season ending on a cliffhanger, we’ll avoid spoilers, but we can still talk a bit about the starting premise: Seven years after unprecedented climate change, survivors have found refuge on a train that does not ‘never stop. Composed of a thousand wagons, individuals are separated into several classes, from the poorest who have nothing to the ultra-rich who live in opulence. A murder will be a game-changer since a former policeman from the tail end will be invited to the front to investigate. If you haven’t seen the first season, you have to fix it as soon as possible …

Our selection of nuggets to (re) discover

You know, it’s very easy to miss out on interesting content on Netflix where one novelty is chasing another. Here is the small selection of the editorial staff with a classic from Scorsese, Japanese animation, British absurdity and a duet of French films on the life of Jacques Mesrine. If you want to share your nuggets, do so in the comments!

The Freedmen

Great classic of gangster cinema, Goodfellas (in original version) is based on the life of Henry Hill, an associate of the Lucchese family from 1955 to 1980. A formidable acting trio (Ray Liotta – Robert de Niro – Joe Pesci) without forgetting Lorraine Braco (Dr Jennifer Melfi in The Sopranos), millimeter dialogues, a hellish soundtrack and a very dynamic production. A film to watch in original version!

Neon Genesis Evangelion

In the year 2000, the sea level rose as a result of the Second Impact, a cataclysm supposedly caused by a meteorite. Humanity survived despite 2 billion deaths, but 15 years later, giant and bellicose creatures, the Angels, appear and try to destroy the new capital of Japan: Tokyo-3. To stop them, humanity can count on EVAs, robots piloted by teenagers. Who are these Angels? Why are they attacking? Where does the power of EVA come from? A quality 26-episode animated movie with two alternate feature-length endings (also available on Netflix), dozens of video games, an alternate 4-episode version (Rebuild of Evangelion) and a mess of manga …

Brian’s Life

The Monthy Python film released in 1979, The Life of Brian is a feature film as Terry Jones knew how to make: absurd, but irresistible sketches. The pitch? Brian was born on the same day as Jesus Christ and like everyone else he hates the occupier Roman. This will push him to join the Popular Front of Judea… Beware of those who do not like subtitles, the film has never been dubbed in French: luckily indeed.

Mesrine: The Death Instinct & The Public Enemy n ° 1

Two very good films on the life of Jacques Mesrine, the most violent French criminal of the 1970s. The first feature film follows events ranging from the end of his military service in Algeria to the death of his accomplice Jean-Paul Mercier while the second begins when he returns to France until its end, Porte de Clignancourt. Great French cinema with Vincent Cassel, Cécile de France, Gérard Depardieu, Mathieu Amalric, Gérard Lanvin…
