Unlock Spirit Ashes
At the beginning of the game, the help of the spirits is not yet available to you. Although you can choose the ashes of the vampire gnomes as a starting gift when creating your character, you cannot summon them, because you need a specific item for this, the ghost-calling bell.
In order to get this item, you must first achieve some game progress. Make sure you have unlocked your horse and leveling up first. To do this, simply sit in a Place of Mercy east or west of the ruins at the gate north of the game’s starting point. Also, collect your first map fragment at the location amidst the ruins.
Then teleport back to the Place of Mercy in the south near the Church of Elleh. Where you found Merchant Kalé and the Blacksmith’s Anvil. You will notice that the place is now shrouded in fog and Kalé is no longer accessible. You meet here Witch Rennawhich speaks to you immediately after your arrival.
More important Notice: You have to teleport to the church so that witch Renna appears. If you walk or ride from the ruins back to the church, it won’t work!
In the conversation she asks you if you can summon the spectral steed. Say yes to this question and it will become yours the spirit-calling bell and the ashes of the lone wolves present. You can grab the ghost wolves directly like an item in your quick selection and summon them at the push of a button, but only if you do so Ghost Gate icon in the bottom left of the screen look. The summoning costs you FP each time. Also keep in mind that ash ghosts are not summonable in multiplayer!
Improve Ash Spirits
While your spirit companions are a real boost from the start, you can even improve them. For this you have to unlock the spirit attunement. First go to the hut on Storm Hill and talk to the woman in the red cloak sitting on the ground several times. This not only gives you an emote, but also the Ashes of the Ghost Jellyfish.
In Castle Stormveil you must then find the keepsake of the dolls on the ground floor. It’s on top of the corpse pile with the hanging troll above it. Right next to the room with the transplanted sprout, where there is also a huge painting.
After you have defeated Margit and unlocked the Round Table Fortress, you will meet the young woman next to the fireplace again, who is posing as Roderika introduces. She tells you in conversation that she is looking for her purpose. Now speak to Blacksmith Hewg in the next room and select the dialogue option “About Roderika”.
Then talk to Roderika again and then again to Hewg and select the options “Would you watch over Roderika?” as “She wants it that way.”. If you now teleport away and travel back, Roderika has set up camp opposite the blacksmith and you can do the spirit attunement with her. For that you need her Tomb Lilies (Normal Ghosts) and Spirit Lilies (Special Spirits) bring to gradually strengthen your Spirit Ashes. You will find graveyard lilies from time to time in the game. They are mostly found in optional dungeons like caves and catacombs.
Enhancement gives your companions more attack power, life energy, and defense. Some upgrades even increase the number of spirits that spawn when summoned.
