Phones are connected to cell towers all day long and as a result our bodies are also exposed to radiation. Every smartphone must therefore meet SAR standards to protect the user. But what exactly are SAR measurements and how do you find them for your phone?

What is SARS?
SAR stands for Special Absorption Rate and it is a measurement of the amount of electromagnetic radiation your body is exposed to through your mobile phone. In recent decades, a great deal of research has been done into possible health risks that can occur when our bodies are exposed to radiation.
Based on these scientific findings, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises government bodies around the world on healthy radiation limits for mobile phones. The European Union has therefore imposed rules on smartphone manufacturers, because every new model on the market must first pass a SAR test.
How is SAR tested and what is the limit?
Our bodies are usually exposed to radiation via telephones in two possible ways. The first when we carry our phone with us and the second when we hold it to the ear during a call. Therefore, regulators measure the absorption of radiation at these two sites.
In Europe, a limit of 2W/kg is used for both the head and the body. That radiation is measured on a zone that is equal to 10 grams of adjacent body tissue. Testers also measure the radiation on the areas of the head and body that absorb the most energy.
Where can I find my phone’s SAR?

- If necessary, press the green phone call
- The results of SAR measurements appear. It is important that you scroll to the heading European Union
- You see the measured values at the head and body, compared to the allowed limits
When comparing SAR values of telephones, make sure that you always compare European measurements, because a different method is used in the US. Also keep in mind that other forms of exposure to electromagnetic radiation to our bodies also have different industry standards than smartphones. Testers therefore use other methods to measure the SAR.
