YouTube is testing a feature that will make it easier for you to watch videos offline

If you’re a YouTube Music user, you’ve probably come across the smart download feature, which downloads your songs whenever you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network, based on your listening habits. It does this to save you mobile data or allow you to listen to music without an internet connection. According to the XDA-Developers portal, YouTube itself now receives a similar function.

The smart download feature is still in the testing phase, and selected users will be prompted to try it out when they open the service’s mobile app. After approval, YouTube will download 20 videos each time the device is connected to a Wi-Fi network. These will not be exclusively videos from your subscribed channels, but various recommended videos that the algorithm selects based on your watch history. The downloaded videos will then be added to your offline playlist.

The download will start automatically and will be notified only to users with insufficient free storage. While the news may seem unnecessary to many, it may please those who do not have an endless package of mobile data or have limited Internet access.

Feature availability is limited so far

This feature is currently only supported in select regions and only on Android 12 devices. And since offline viewing is only available to YouTube Premium subscribers, you won’t be able to try it out without it. If you are not prompted or ignored the application when you start the application, you will be able to access it again in the settings in the Try new features section. The opportunity to register for testing will be available until February 14.
