6 companies together account for 57% of internet traffic
For the first time, major digital companies have a larger share of global internet traffic than all other players combined. These are: Google, Meta, Netflix, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft.
Internet traffic worldwide
Since the start of the corona pandemic, digitization has been gaining momentum. We spend more time online, both in the workplace and in our spare time, and as a result, internet consumption is increasing. At the beginning of 2020, YouTube and Netflix responded to the increased consumption by lowering the streaming quality.
The analysis company Sandvine publishes figures on worldwide internet use. It shows that 56.96 percent of internet volume now takes place through six companies: Google, Meta, Netflix, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft. Even if you do not include the latter, the five largest players together account for more than half of our internet consumption.
It is the first time that the most important digital companies have played a bigger role than all other companies combined, because in 2019 they still accounted for 43.10 percent of the internet volume. It is especially striking that the social networks of Meta and services of Google have made a big leap.
Press telecom providers
Sandvine analysts argue that the corona crisis is causing a tipping point in digitization. It is expected that more and more business sectors will work digitally and will be interconnected.
The quality requirements for the internet will therefore also be higher if we see a further rise in robotics, remote healthcare and self-driving cars. It is mainly the telecom providers that have to provide the necessary solutions in this changing world.
