This NFT poo emoji makes fun of the whole concept

An NFT of Signal’s founder looks like a poo emoji and makes fun of the concept of this “art”.

Moxie Marlinspike, the founder of the Signal messaging service, has created an NFT (non-fungible token). But not one that you expect, as this one takes the whole concept of NFTs.

“In my opinion, #1”, as the piece is called, is rendered differently depending on where you see it. It has a contrasting look to NFT marketplaces OpenSea and Rarible, but the real fun begins if and when someone buys it. As noted by The Verge. They say it will look like a big old poo emoji.

Poo Emoji as NFT

An NFT is a unique digital token, which is essentially a certificate of authenticity that shows that someone owns a digital artwork, music or other collectible. It lives on the blockchain. This with the idea that the blockchain ledger adds more security and transparency. Often, however, the media to which an NFT pertains is not on the blockchain. The NFT is basically a verified link to it.

That’s the aspect of NFTs that Marlinspike plays with with “To my liking, #1.” Whoever controls the destination of the URL can change the image at any time. Marlinspike says his NFT is displayed differently depending on the IP address or user agent “so the NFT image data is never consistent, and what you bid on is not what you get.”

Owner of what?

The description of the NFT on OpenSea and Rarible points to this. “You may own (?) the results of this function call, but I own the function.” Right now, the highest bid on the NFT is about $1,067 on Ethereum. Whether the bidders really know what they are bidding on, that is the question. But it could just be that (also) this ’emoji’ can suddenly become worth more money.
