Netflix rolls out Spatial Audio support
The arrival of Spatial Audio is not a big surprise. Last January it turned out that the streaming service was working on it. In conversation with The Verge confirms a Netflix spokesperson that the rollout of Spatial Audio has begun for the iPhone and iPad.
It is a phased rollout. If the function does not work for you now, it is useful to check it again in a few days. Spatial Audio is not available for all films and series, by the way: only certain titles can handle the new audio function.
You also need to run at least iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 and you need the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. The ‘regular’ AirPods earbuds cannot play surround sound. The function also works when you use the beta of iOS 15 or iPadOS 15.
More about Spatial Audio
Spatial Audio, or ‘Spatial audio’ in Dutch, is Apple’s own version of surround sound. As soon as you turn on the function, it seems as if you are ‘between’ the sound of the movie or series you are watching. Even if you move your head, the virtual sound remains in place.
Before it works, you have to enable Spatial Audio via the settings menu of your iPhone or iPad. Tap “Bluetooth” in the settings and find your AirPods Pro or AirPods Max in the list.
Then press the info button next to the device and slide the switch at ‘Spatial audio’ so that the box turns green. After that, all you need to do is turn on a suitable Netflix movie or series to enjoy Apple’s surround sound!
