Format text – bold, italic, underline & more
If you want to highlight something in a text message on Discord, you can bold it with the correct characters, italicize it and underline or strike it out. Block quotes and code blocks with the text formatting of the desktop application and app from Discord are also possible. You can find out exactly how this works here at GIGA.

You can find out how to mark texts, images and other content as spoilers in Discord here:
Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough
You can use the asterisk (*), Underscore (_) and Tilde (~) in the desktop application (PC) and app (smartphone & tablet). The different formats can be freely combined. Which and how many characters you have to use before and after your text line, we show here in the table:
formatting | Required characters |
fat | **text** |
Italic | *text* OR _text_ |
Underlined | __text__ |
~~text~~ | |
Bold and italic | ***text*** OR ** _text_ ** |
Bold, italic, and underline | *** __text__ *** OR ** ___text___ ** OR __ ** _text_ ** __ |
*** ~~text~~ *** OR ** _ ~~text~~ _ ** |
In the desktop application, you can also mark the respective line of text and use the context menu to select how the text should be formatted.
Block quotes and blocks of code
If you want to reproduce a quote, you can create an indented block. You can also display text as a code block, i.e. in a box with the font “Monospace”. How this works in the desktop application (PC) and in the app (smartphone & tablet) can be found here:
- To the text line of your text as an indented quote to represent, you set a greater than sign (>) and a space at the beginning.
- If the following lines should also be displayed as a block quote, you set three larger characters (>>>) and a space at the beginning.
- To get the text as Code block you have to portray it before and after the desired text excerpt Backtick or Gravis (`) put.
- If the following lines should also be displayed as a code block, you set three backticks (,,,) before and after the text excerpt.
With the right text formatting, your chat messages are easier to read, stand out more and are more attractive than long text deserts in which nothing happens. Even on Discord, for example, you can recognize quotes more quickly, follow help more easily through appropriate boldface and even better convey the humor that is often lost in the text.
