SpaceX and Blue Origin face competition from… Porsche!
Space seems to be a dream for many, but it seems that a notable party is now also showing an interest in extraterrestrial travel. Porsche invests in space agency Isar!
We’ve seen most of our own planet by now, so we want to step outside of it. Well, space travel for exploration is by no means new. Relatively new are serious plans to make space travel commercial. A return ticket to Mars, so to speak.
Commercial
Two big players in this are Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos with SpaceX and Blue Origin. Musk and his space ideas have been discussed much more often and we have recently been able to follow Bezos’ space adventures closely. Great strides are being made and commercial space travel may soon be imminent. Whether it’s going to be a ‘first come first serve’ contest between Bezos and Musk, or whether each company is competing, the latter seems likely.
Isar
And so there is room (har-har) for another player. Munich-based Isar Aerospace, for example. This company deals with rockets, satellites and everything to get into space. But one of Isar’s spearheads is also commercial space travel. Ultimately, people should be able to buy a return ticket to Mars from Isar. Ambitious plans.
Porsche + Isar
Enough to pique the interest of an investor. And last but not least: Porsche AG is investing in Isar Aerospace. The car brand announced this in a press release. A special step for the car brand: the connection between Porsche and space is not very obvious.
Porsche is going to make a special space version of the 911 together with Isar. No, Porsche is mainly interested in the technologies that will be used. A lot is needed for a space journey and those innovations can be used very well in cars.
With the financial contributions from Porsche, among others, Isar wants to have a rocket in space for the first time next year. The company can already count on 180 million dollars from investors. It is not known whether there will be a special Porsche sports package called Isar, just like with Tesla.
