Google is introducing direct storage of vaccination certificates to Android

On June 30, the American company Google, the day before the official launch of covid passports in many EU countries (including the Czech Republic), published a news that the confirmation of coronavirus vaccination can be stored directly on the Android phone. And it in the form of a quickly available card, which is normally reserved for the Google Pay payment instrument. The company has redesigned the so-called Passes API, which developers can now use “covid” applications to connection to state applications and records.

Ultimately, this means that the owner of any mobile phone running Android 5 or later can upload a “card” directly to their device confirming the vaccination. Therefore, if this option is enabled by the developer of the covid passport variant in the given country. In this case, the vaccination certificate is stored only on the mobile phone and is not shared or backed up anywhere. If the user wanted the same confirmation on multiple phones, he would have to manually re-upload. Google is currently launching this news in the US and is planning to release it to other countries. It is said that Google Pay itself is not needed for proper functioning.
